And we begin!

The Monterrey International Film Festival began sucessfully with the screening of "The Black Pimpernel" (Ulf Hultberg, 2007).

After the inauguration ceremony, Raquel Guajardo, executive producer, Ulf Hultberg and Asa Faringer, directors and Michael Lundeskov, producer were invited onstage, and were joined by the cast to present the film.

The night´s surprise was the presence of the Lavanderos family, who lived a very similar story to the one told in the film.

They took them alive

"Vivos los llevaron, vivos los queremos" (alive they took them, alive we want them) is a documentary about political dissappearances in 1970´s Monterrey. Mrs. Rosario Ibarra de Piedra (second from right in the photo) is one of the leading activists claiming the return of their sons and loved ones.

Cecilia Serna (last one on the right in the photo) directed the film which is now participating in the VISION SOCIAL section of the Festival. Vision Social (Social Vision) is a section dedicated to films that explores issues relevant to the filmmakers community. It is non competitive because of the nature of the films, which can be shorts, medium length or features, documentary, fiction or a mix of both. The aim is to highlight the positive uses of the medium to better societies and the world. Film (and film festivals) has a responsability to the community, and Visión Social is an effort to acknowledge it.

"Vivos los llevaron, vivos los queremos" will be playing at MMCinemas Tec, theater 4 on August 17th.

2007 PROMO

The Festival is happy to present its 2007 promo. The work of several very creative people, the short film is fresh and groovy. Jorge González, our image designer, provided the basic imagery that Morfo, our key animator brought to life and mixed to a score by Chewbacca. Chewbacca? Well yeah...

Chewbacca is the name musician Daniel Rodríguez goes by. He blames Morfo (his nick is a whole other story) with his baptism under the wookie name. "Morfo had a radio show, and he played different characters, when people asked him who played Chewbacca, he said it was me..."

Morfo (check out his videos at www.youtube.com/morfologico) is quite a character. He seems not to sleep at all... or to sleep throughout the day... he's funny, loyal and very creative.

The staff worked long distance thanks to the internet. Chewbacca from Canada where he's currently going to music school and Morfo from ESTUDIO MORFIX in Monterrey (Actually the Morfix residence, studio, office, and many other things). After quite a few nights work, the promo was finally done and ready to be transferred to 35mm and of course, uploaded to the web.

So check out the video and let us know what you think!

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN

Well, it´s been a week since we closed our call for entries. The selection committee has been working hard because 1354 filmmakers from 80 different countries have helped us break our record with the largest number of entries the festival has ever had.

We wish you all the best of luck. We will be publishing results for the official selection on our website at the beginning of july. Please be patient... :)

Thanks to all of the filmmakers that sent us their films and please come back soon for more news about the Monterrey International Film Festival.

Last Day

Today we´ve come to the last day of our call for entries. There have been many more submissions than any other year. Today we´ve had repeat visits from the mailman, DHL, Fedex, UPS, and other national and international couriers. We´ll soon have a full report on how many films and from how many countries. It is always exciting to open a package from a country half a way around the world and be able to see what a filmmaker saw and fixed upon celluloid or video. It really helps you to not forget the real sense of a film festival: the coming together of images, thoughts, ideas and minds.

FIVE CONTINENTS, MILLIONS OF IMAGES

This has been our motto at the Monterrey International Film Festival for the last few years and we´re very happy to be able to continue saying that the world´s images come together in Monterrey. Filmmakers from over 75 different countries have registered their films, and there´s still five days more to the final deadline.

So if you haven´t sent your film yet... send it today!

We´ve received films from all the regions highlighted in red in the following map:

One week to final deadline

We´re a week away from our final deadline and very happy with the materials that we´ve received and keep receiving every day. We´re close friends with our postman and all the major and minor courier service delivery men now. We´re getting close to 900 entries. Today we counted over 60 different countries. Including some first timers, like Kirgistan. It still amazes us to see the world map and tag all the countries from which we´ve received films.

If you haven´t sent your film yet... do it now! Close this blog, get your tapes or DVD´s and rush out to send them. A week from the deadline, you´ll be better off using a courier service... It takes about two weeks to get a package that was sent from the United States, Canada or Europe. The rest of the world is at least three weeks by ordinary mail away. If you do send your films, don´t forget to register online at www.ficmty.org.

So we´re watching a lot of films... and a lot of good films... so this year is going to be a tough competition. Best of luck to all of you participating, with 900 films we know that at least ten times as many people participated in making them, and thats a lot of friends to have. We´ll keep in touch!
